A machine translator can usually provide instant results however these translations are draft quality (at best) most of the time. Generally they can only provide a rough outline of what your translatable text is about, which will often be understandable, however if you are familiar with the language you will realize that there are problems in the translation.
A machine translator basically substitutes words (and sometimes phrases) from the dictionary from one language to another. It knows the grammar and spelling very well but can't get context and intended meaning right. The machine doesn't know about style and can't take the whole sentence, paragraph or text into consideration while translating. This is the reason why it is often a good laugh reading the text which was translated by a machine.
On the other hand, if you would like a precise and meaningful translation it is advisable to choose a human translator. The translation might take a few hours longer but you will receive a much higher quality, exact and accurate translation.
A human will understand the meaning and thought of the original text and successfully carry this through to the translation rather than just substituting words one by one. Due to the fact languages and cultures have their own individual slang's, expressions and terminology, that cannot simply be translated in their literal form, true translation can never be a case of just swapping words. A human can get all the shades of meaning that a language has. Knowledge of the culture, slang and phrases is very crucial which a machine simply doesn't have.
So, as you can see, the job of a translator is to not just translate words but to also translate meaning and context across the idiosyncrasies of each language. A human will be able to choose the suitable style and linguistic based on his or her experience and knowledge instead of a limited dictionary style database a machine will have.
Machines have a long way to go before they get anywhere near being able to achieve translation similar to the quality from a human. So if you would like to have the true meaning interpreted then definitely choose a human translator.
